Experience - Hi, my name is Chris and I am a guitarist and teacher from Houston, TX. I began playing the guitar at the age of eight, influenced by blues and rock greats Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn and others and began studying classical guitar at age ten. At age 13, I won the under 18 category in the “Houston’s Best Guitarist” contest. While studying jazz at the High School for the Visual and Performing Arts in Houston TX, I began working professionally as a guitarist, playing locally in clubs and at corporate functions and also began teaching private music lessons at my local music store. In 1993 I was awarded the Jason Moran Scholarship for Jazz Studies and studied at the Manhattan School of Music for two weeks in the summer. I performed in the Texas All-State Jazz Ensemble in 1994 and 1995. I majored in jazz guitar under scholarship at the University of Miami and performed in the renowned University of Miami Concert Jazz Band for 3 years. There I performed with several bands and artists in South Florida and in 2000 toured Florida with Welsh superstar singer Dame Shirley Bassey. Upon graduating from college, I coached a jazz guitar ensemble of five undergraduate guitarists and a rhythm section at the University of Miami. I also led the jazz guitar program at Miami’s arts magnet high school, “New World School of the Arts” and taught jazz improvisation to a large class of multi-instrumentalists. In 2000, after moving to New York City, I toured nationally with neo-soul songstress Angie Stone in support of her album, “Mahogany Soul” and appeared on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno”, “Live at the Apollo” and BET’s “106th and Park”. During this time I also performed, recorded and/or toured the US and Japan with African pop singer and superstar fusion bassist Richard Bona and Japanese jazz pioneer and saxophonist Sadao Watanabe. Along with balancing performing, songwriting and recording, I taught guitar, bass and piano privately to a wide variety of students. After moving to Japan in 2004, I performed with numerous bands and artists including Japanese taiko drummer Isaku Kageyama. Our CD, “Hybrid Soul”, a creative collaboration fusing musical elements from Japanese folk songs, psychedelic rock and ambient music was released in 2011. In 2012, I performed with Japanese rock icon Eikichi Yazawa for a live television broadcast for the opening of Tokyo Sky Tree, the tallest tower in the world. Currently in Austin I stay busy teaching and performing!
